2. The gradient would look black on the bottom and become lighter towards the top of the canvas (fading from black to white.)

To change the gradient from transitioning from a solid color to a transparent, you need to click on the icon that is second from the left on the top bar that shows a little gradient of what it will look like. Click on the second on from the right and it shows the color fading into a gray and white checkerboard pattern (this represents transparency.)
