2. What shutter speed do you think the photographer used and why? A fast shutter speed, maybe 1/60 because the dog in the photo is still, and dogs rarely ever stop moving.

3. What aperture setting do you think the photographer used and why? A large aperture (F3.5-F5.6) because of the shutter speed being so fast, there needs to be more light let in.

4. What ISO setting do you think the photographer used and why? A low ISO because the picture was taken during day time, and mostly ISO is used for dim lighting, or night shooting.

3. What aperture setting do you think the photographer used and why? A smaller aperture (F8) because the lighting is dim even though it is outside.

4. What ISO setting do you think the photographer used and why? Low ISO. It is a black and white photo and doesn't appear to be too grainy for film.

Week 9 Make Up Work

First photo.

1. What do you notice first in this photograph? The people on the train tracks.

2. Are there people in this photograph, and, if so, what are they doing, and where are they located? Yes there are. They seem to be looking at the fire, and walking. They are on the train tracks.

3. How would you describe the train tracks in this photograph? When do you think the train tracks were last used? It looks as if the train tracks are inactive. They look pretty desolate so they probably haven't been used in a long time. They're rusted over also, showing their age.

4. The burning house is made of what material? Looks like wood to me.

5. What are the objects in the yard in front of the burning house? I can't really tell what they exactly are, they're boxes, or storage of some sort. There's also cinderblocks, pipes, and gravel.

6. At what time of day do you think this photograph was taken? It looks like sunset.

Write a short story (a paragraph or two) based on this photograph.

All was calm in the town until the sun went down. When the sun started going down, the air turned to fog, people all around gathered to the bleak area of an abandoned house near a set of abandoned train tracks. No one really went over there, only the kids that were up to no good. But that day was different then any other day, a lonely kid was in the house all alone. No one knew, no one cared, until the air began to fog. The firemen were called, the boy had fled, the towns people had flocked to the scene. The house was left, burning, abandoned, and more damaged then ever.

Proposal

For this project, I would like to emulate Alcove (of DeviantArt), because I enjoy his photo's and also enjoy taking photos of the same things he photographs. I like the time of day he also takes his photos (usually at dusk or night). He takes beautiful photos and they are inspiring. They come out very nicely, and I would like to take pictures like that. I like the moods of his photos also. Sometimes you can sense the tension, sneakiness, mellowness, adventure, calmness, and serenity in them, and I would like to be able to capture moods like that.

This photographer works alone. I will also be working alone for this. He uses photoshop (which I enjoy using) and uses a DSLR camera, and this is the type of camera I will be using. He also photographs color photos, and not black and white ones. Most lighting seems to be natural, any other lighting added would be added through photoshop, which I plan to be using. I also plan to take photos of the same nature as he does, for example, photos of the outside, of nature, of buildings, and for the most part not of people.

The subject I will photograph in this style will be of woods, trees, waterscapes, hills, snow, bogs, ponds, or any vintage building that catches my eye because I like to take pictures of these things, I think they have a natural beauty of their own and cannot be planned photographs. I will probably take these photos around the same time his photographs were taken. I like to take pictures at dusk because the lighting is prettier then in the afternoon because afternoon lighting seems bland, it's also too bright in the morning and dusk is not as harsh as no light at night.

Photographer's Styles

Ansel Adams:

Ansel Adams seems to have used film because of the time period. Most photo's, especially of nature seem to have natural lighting. It appears that Ansel Adams worked alone, and there were not shot in a studio or with a crew. There doesn't seem to be photoshop, because of what time period it was (again,) but there might have been manipulation to the film to accomplish the goal of the photographer. Most photographs seemed to be natural also, and not have many props.

Alcove:

Alcove's photos are digital prints. Since the photos that were taken seem to be mostly outside, mountain trails, towns, houses, it seems that there is natural lighting. The only prop that could have been used in Alcove's photos were probably the setting up of people, but most of the photos look like they were "caught in the moment" photos. There is very subtle photoshop, mostly the lighting is altered and maybe enhancing, but nothing to drastic like taking things out and replacing them with other things.

Foureyes:
Foureye's photos are also digital prints. Many of the photos were of nature (beach, mountain) and cities (texas, asia) so there was mostly natural lighting used, even though in a few photo's he used light to capture the mood, for example, he used a flashlight to capture the mood of a seashell on a beach in texas where he inserted a glowstick into the shell for a neon effect. There doesn't appear to be very noticeable photoshop, mostly it's just altering the lighting. The props he uses, if any, are natural and make sense (shells, chairs, people.)
